Did the Magi use astrology to find Jesus?

The Magi following the star to Jesus is sometimes cited as an example of God using Space and its magnificent bodies for His purposes, this is not astrology in the traditional sense.

The answer is no

For one, the star was a divine sign—not a tool of divination. They weren’t consulting star maps or calculating the meaning of the movements of heavenly bodies. Instead, they were simply responding to a sign they believed was sent by God.

Secondly, they weren’t using the star as a means to manipulate the future for themselves or for anyone else. Their simple aim in following the star was to go worship someone they believed to be a new king—far different from the kings of their time.

Thirdly, the star wasn’t a singular celestial body we can absolutely pinpoint based on current science. It looks like it was an anomalous phenomenon, for believers, a divine creation for that moment in time.

In the end, the Magi were guided to act on an extraordinary sign that appeared in their horizon.

While the Greco-Roman world in which Jesus and the apostles lived believed in astrology—attributing star alignments to determine the course of one’s personality and life outcomes—those early followers of Jesus generally rejected it as incompatible.

Their aversion was based on the belief that free will and the sovereignty of God determined our lives and futures—not the celestial bodies moving above us.

They also believed in Old Testament teachings against divination and trusting star signs for advice.

St. Augustine wrote in City of God that astrology undermines our taking responsibility for our own decisions, our own actions—and negates God’s will, too.

Christian horoscopes today

But what about Christians today?

Many professed Christians do read horoscopes in the newspapers or on apps—just as a bit of fun and entertainment. Ministers like to warn people not to fall back on them to make decisions.

Rather, the best counsel is found in our relationships with others and in our faith in God.

But there are others who have taken from Greco-Roman astrology and appropriated them to create Christian-based horoscopes and use them as devotionals. They have become tools of spiritual growth and enrichment—within the confines of Christian theology (mainline churches).

It is in that spirit I offer this Christian horoscope for your devotional use.
